Healthier Water ChoicesThis is a featured page

Disposable water bottles are not only environment costly they can be potentially harmful to your health!

Certain plastics release chemicals that could be potentially harmful, especially to children, whose bodies are still developing. Some of the harmful ingredients in recyclable plastic include:

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), which is used as a softener, commonly contains di-2-ehtylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), an endocrine disruptor and probable human carcinogen.

Polystyrene (PS), a possible endocrine disruptor and human carcinogen, into water and food may leach styrene.

Polycarbonate contains the hormone disruptor bisphenol-A, which can leach out as bottles age, are heated or exposed to acidic solutions.

There is usually a number somewhere on the recyclable water bottle. Look out for any of the following numbers that represents one of the mentioned ingredients in recyclable plastic.

#3 Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
#6 Polystyrene (PS)
#7 Polycarbonate (used in most baby bottles and five-gallon water jugs and in many reusable sports bottles)

Seriously consider the use of plastic bottles with the no's 1, 3, 6 and 7 (polycarbonate), which leach dangerous chemicals. It's not recommended to heat anything in these types of plastic bottles, and if they show any signs of wear and tear, discard them.

If you are trying to decide what number is the safest to use, stick to numbers 2, 4, 5 and 7 whenever you can.
